I spent yesterday’s Social Media Allotment squeeing and fangirling about various things, but today, it’s time to get serious.
Even if you skip every single one of my famous Emily Teal Deers, please don’t skip this one, because it’s really important.
There is a bad time coming.
The high tariffs Trump has imposed across the board are causing almost no new incoming shipments from China.
This means our ports are nearly empty.
The coming shortages are going to make the Covid shortages look like nothing.
Truckers are reporting empty loads.
People living by ports are saying there are almost no containers coming in.
People living by major rivers are saying they see almost no barges carrying products.
There is too much uncertainty about the costs, so retailers are choosing not to import anything right now in the hopes that Trump comes to his senses.
This means that things aren’t going to be available at a higher price like people think– they aren’t going to be available at all.
China is also renegotiating trade deals with other countries as we speak.
Even if Trump walks back the tariffs today, it’s going to take at least another month if not longer for things to start coming back in stock again.
This is also if China hasn’t decided to wash their hands of us entirely.
It’s not just cheap, mass produced junk that fills our Five Belows and Dollar Trees that is going to go away.
I’m cool with that, and can even get behind it.
Americans have an addiction to consumption, and that is true.
But we also depend on China for lots of things we don’t think about.
Like plastic pill bottles.
Like bags for saline solution.
Like rare earth metals.
Like steel.
Even products assembled in the US often depend on imported raw materials.
In a matter of weeks, these shortages are going to hit stores across the nation.
Walmart and Target CEOs recently met with Trump, warning him of empty shelves.
And if I’m noticing this, when half the time I’m floating out in Cloud Cuckoo-land? It’s going to get bad.
I urge you to stock up on whatever you need while you still can.
Please take this seriously.
And pray.
Even if you don’t believe… pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
